What Is the Transfăgărășan?
The Transfăgărășan (national road DN7C) stretches approximately 90 kilometres between Curtea de Argeș in the south and Sibiu in the north. Built between 1970 and 1974 for military purposes, the road climbs to an altitude of 2,042 metres, passing through the Capra tunnel, alongside Lake Bâlea, and over the Bâlea Pass.
Top Gear famously called it "the best road in the world" — and after driving it, most visitors completely agree.
When Is the Transfăgărășan Open?
The alpine segment (between Bâlea Waterfall and Bâlea Lake) is typically open from July to October, depending on weather conditions. The lower sections of the road are accessible year-round.
Our recommendation: Visit in August or September — the snow has fully melted, the entire road is open, and crowds are smaller than during peak July.

- Descent to Curtea de Argeș — Vidraru Dam, Poenari Fortress

- No overtaking on narrow sections — be patient with slower vehicles
- Pull into designated parking areas before taking photos — never stop in the road
