The Transfăgărășan Highway is one of the most breathtaking roads in the world. Stretching across the Carpathian Mountains in central Romania, this legendary route connects Transylvania with Wallachia through wild alpine passes, glacial lakes, and unforgettable scenery. Whether you're a road trip enthusiast or a first-time visitor to Romania, this guide covers everything you need to know.
What Is the Transfăgărășan?
The Transfăgărășan (national road DN7C) stretches approximately 90 kilometres between Curtea de Argeș in the south and Sibiu in the north. Built between 1970 and 1974 for military purposes, the road climbs to an altitude of 2,042 metres, passing through the Capra tunnel, alongside Lake Bâlea, and over the Bâlea Pass.
Top Gear famously called it "the best road in the world" — and after driving it, most visitors completely agree.
When Is the Transfăgărășan Open?
The alpine segment (between Bâlea Waterfall and Bâlea Lake) is typically open from July to October, depending on weather conditions. The lower sections of the road are accessible year-round.
Our recommendation: Visit in August or September — the snow has fully melted, the entire road is open, and crowds are smaller than during peak July.
⚠️ Always check road conditions on infotrafic.ro before departing. The road can close suddenly due to fog or early snowfall.
What Car Do You Need?
You don't need a 4x4 or SUV, but your vehicle should be in good mechanical condition. Key requirements:
- Good brakes — the descent features tight hairpin bends and steep gradients
- Adequate engine power — the climb is demanding, especially with passengers and luggage
- Air conditioning — temperatures can vary by 15–20°C between the base and summit
At Transylvania Car, every vehicle in our fleet is fully serviced before each rental. Pick up your car in Sibiu, Brașov, Cluj-Napoca or Târgu Mureș — all conveniently close to the Transfăgărășan.
Recommended Route — Step by Step
Starting from Sibiu (recommended)
- Sibiu → Tălmaciu (30 km) — flat road heading south out of the city
- Tălmaciu → Bâlea Waterfall (45 km) — the ascent begins, alpine scenery appears
- Bâlea Waterfall → Bâlea Lake (10 km) — the most spectacular section, dramatic hairpin bends
- Bâlea Lake — mandatory stop, allow 30–60 minutes
- Descent to Curtea de Argeș — Vidraru Dam, Poenari Fortress
Estimated Times
- One way: 3–4 hours (with photo stops)
- Full loop Sibiu–Curtea de Argeș–Sibiu: 7–9 hours
Top 5 Stops Along the Way
- Bâlea Lake — glacial lake at 2,034 m, chalet, panoramic views in every direction
- Bâlea Waterfall — impressive cascade accessible from the roadside car park
- Vidraru Dam — a stunning arch dam on the descent toward Argeș
- Poenari Fortress — the real castle of Vlad the Impaler, 1,480 steps to the top
- Capra Tunnel — the only tunnel on the route, 887 metres long
Practical Tips
- Start early (7:00–8:00 AM) to avoid midday traffic jams near the summit
- Fill up with fuel before the climb — no petrol stations exist on the alpine segment
- Pack warm layers even if it's hot at the base — at Bâlea Lake it can drop below 10°C
- No overtaking on narrow sections — be patient with slower vehicles
- Pull into designated parking areas before taking photos — never stop in the road
